National Philanthropy & Focus
The Divas of Lambda Pi Upsilon Sorority look forward to working for and focusing on children and women in need. The Six Pillars of Strength believed that children and women are the key to our future hence it is our duty to aid academically, financially and via hands-on interactions always con Amor, Dignidad Y Orgullo.
Recently, we realized the connection between our focus and asthma awareness. The passing of one of our Hermanas led us to research the effects of Asthma, specifically within women of color. That research brought to light the fact that Asthma is extremely deadly affecting more than 300,000 women and children yearly.
Outrageous Omicron Philanthropy
Each entity in Lambda Pi Upsilon has a chapter philanthropy they focus and bring awareness to at their respective universities. As the Outrageous Omicron Chapter, we have decided to focus on juvenile diabetes. According to our research, juvenile diabetes is the name given to the disorder in which the body has trouble regulating its blood glucose (blood sugar) levels. Juvenile diabetes, also known as type one diabetes (T1D), is one of the major forms of diabetes. T1D is also known as insulin-dependent diabetes, which is a disorder of the body's immune system -- that is, its system for protecting itself from viruses, bacteria or any "foreign" substances.
We have chosen our chapter's philanthropic focus to be juvenile diabetes because each Founding Hermana of this Chapter is strongly affected by the disease in various ways. More importantly, this type of diabetes affects children, which is something that the organization greatly focuses on. All of the Founding Hermanas have members of their family who have the disease, and even more personally one of the Founding Hermanas has the disease herself. We have all personally seen the struggles and difficulties involved with the disease and we feel that we should educate the SUNY New Paltz campus about this, being that it is a disease that is not widely discussed on our campus. We will take pride in educating the community about the disease because college students are prone to getting diabetes because of the way that their diets change while being in school. We will make sure that all students are aware of the disease and ways to prevent it and to maintain their health if they do have it.
